In a initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold commencement to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
