The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
