Administration Announces Government Employee Job Cuts as Funding Gap Nears Three-Week Mark
Administration officials confirmed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, following through on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.
Formal Statement and Initial Details
Russell Vought wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official procedure for letting employees go.
Although Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.
Union Response and Court Actions
Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by the public and pledged to contest the actions in court.
This is shameful that the government has used the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.
The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Political Standoff and Budget Dispute
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be ended soon.
At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP proposal, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.
Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”
Legal and Operational Constraints
Previously, unions filed for a temporary restraining order to block the administration from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge directed the administration to disclose details on layoff plans, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to carry out staff reductions.
An analysis contended that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the government to carry out firings, referencing guidance that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.
Consequences for Employees
The layoffs took place on the same day that government employees got only a partial paycheck for the end of the previous month but not the beginning of October, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the month.
Max Stier, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.
This is unjust to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government running,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not at fault for this funding crisis.”
The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
